Sheela Basrur Centre   The mission of the Sheela Basrur Centre is to strengthen the capabilities, knowledge and expertise of public health professionals and to educate the public on key strategies to promote health. Its outreach initiatives include a series of educational events and professional development programs in support of public health renewal and leadership in Ontario.
     
Dr. Sheela Basrur was an outstanding leader in the field of public health. She had a remarkable career before succumbing to cancer on June 2, 2008 at the age of 51. Dr. Basrur was a public figure who built strong relationships with many organizations and with the people of Ontario. The Sheela Basrur Centre, under the leadership of the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion, honours her legacy.

The Sheela Basrur Centre provides integrated training and learning opportunities for health professionals such as nurses, doctors, researchers, technicians, caregivers and scientists. These opportunities include integrated learning and training to connect participants with the broader health system and cutting-edge expertise. There are three components:

The Sheela Basrur Student Travel Bursary Award

Drs. Vasanth and Pari Basrur have established a travel bursary in memory of their daughter, Dr. Sheela Basrur. The Sheela Basrur student travel bursary is intended to support the next generation of public health professionals in Ontario and overseas, by broadening their experience and knowledge base in public health. 

The Sheela Basrur travel bursary will provide an advanced understanding of public health in different jurisdictions by supporting students in undergraduate or graduate programs who wish to travel for a public health placement and require financial assistance with travel costs. There will be up to 2 travel bursaries awarded each year consisting of $2,000 Canadian.
