Sheela Basrur Portrait

Portrait of Sheela Basrur

This portrait of Dr. Sheela Basrur was painted by Gerda Neubacher. It is part of FEMME, a series of nearly 100 portraits of Canada’s most intriguing and accomplished women. Dr. Basrur’s portrait, like those of the other women in the series, reveals how she saw herself as both a public and a private person.

The International Women’s Forum, Toronto Chapter, generously donated the portrait to Public Health Ontario (PHO).

Portrait"The image Gerda has captured so well in this portrait envisions a harlequin, representing two sides of my being – outer and inner, expressed and desired, achieved and as yet unrealized, restrained by convention and free to be myself.”

- Sheela Basrur
