Donations FAQs

1. How do I donate to the SBC?

There are many ways you can donate to the Sheela Basrur Centre and its many initiatives.

To our programs
Your support goes furthest when you allow us to apply it directly to our programs. This will also provide an opportunity for you to witness the impact and reach of our awards and training courses.  In 2015, the Sherwin family made a generous donation to the Centre’s student programs in honour of their late aunt and former public health nurse, Alice Sherwin. Their donation has made valuable international experiences and training possible for the next generation of public health experts. Like the Sherwins, you can also donate to our programs. Program donors will be acknowledged and recognized on SBC promotional materials, platforms and at our events.

To donate to a specific SBC program please contact the Centre at:
647-260-7100  or  SBC@oahpp.ca.

Give to the Sheela Basrur Fund

Contributions made to the Sheela Basrur Fund are tax-deductible. Our partner, the Toronto Foundation (TF), manages these donations and issues tax receipts to our donors. You will receive a tax receipt in the mail within a month of making your donation.

Online donations can be made by following these simple steps:
  1. Go to the Sheela Basrur Centre Fund webpage.
  2. Click on the “Donate to Fund” button.
  3. Complete the donation form and click on the “Contribute” button.
Telephone/mail donations can be made by contacting the Toronto Foundation (TF) :

2. What does SBC do with the donations?

The donations we collect support the Centre's programs and activities and ensures the advancement of public health leaders in the province.  Your generous donations help fund programs like the Media Training Workshop, Don Low Communications Fellowship, Student Travel Bursary and Communications Student Award and the annual Sheela Basrur Centre Lecture. These programs provide current and emerging public health professionals access to experts in the media and public health sector, cutting-edge information and knowledge, in addition to a wide range of communications resources. Your donation will support us in creating growth within the sector, bolstering the next generation of public health professionals.

3. If I am donating to SBC why do I have to make my donation to the Toronto Foundation?

If you wish to receive a tax receipt for your contribution, an endowment fund has been created for the Centre through our partner, The Toronto Foundation. The Toronto Foundation manages donations on behalf of not-for-profit/community organizations like the Sheela Basrur Centre, issuing tax receipts to our donors for their charitable gifts.

Alternatively, you can also give directly to a specific Sheela Basrur Centre program of your choice. Since SBC is not a registered charity, the Centre does not issue tax receipts for these contributions.  Program donors will be acknowledged and recognized on SBC promotional materials, platforms and at our events. Please see question #1 for more information on giving to specific SBC programs.

4. Is the SBC a charity organization?

No, the SBC is not a registered charity. Like other small not-for-profit programs, we have a partnership with the Toronto Foundation that administers the donations on our behalf and issues tax receipts.

5. What is the Toronto Foundation?

The Toronto Foundation connects philanthropy with community needs and opportunities in order to make Toronto the best place to live, work, learn, and grow.

Established in 1981, the Toronto Foundation has grown to hold over $250 million in assets and to work with hundreds of concerned Torontonians and high-impact community organizations.

The Toronto Foundation is a registered, public, non-profit organization created for and by the people of Toronto.

6. Will I receive a tax receipt for my donation?

Donations made to the Sheela Basrur Centre fund through the Toronto Foundation are tax deductible. Donors will receive a tax receipt in the mail from the Toronto Foundation within a month of making a donation.

The donations made to specific programs directly support a program of the donor’s choice. Since SBC is not a registered charity, the Centre does not issue tax receipts for these contributions.  These donors will be acknowledged and recognized on SBC promotional materials, platforms and at our events.

7. How does the Sheela Basrur Centre support public health in Ontario?
