Media Training Workshops

Media Training

Effective communication is the cornerstone of public health.
Rapidly evolving events require timely communication. Policy decisions are made and health messages communicated under uncertainty about the magnitude and exact nature of the risks. Poorly handled communications can create or exacerbate the understanding of risks.

In November 2016, SBC and PHO held an interactive media training workshop for public health professionals seeking to advance their communications and media spokesperson skills.

IMG_7638.JPGThe Advanced Media Training Workshop offered in-depth training to a small group, focusing on interview and delivery techniques, key message development and performance in phone and television style interviews.

This intimate and interactive workshop was facilitated by Karen Gordon of Gordon Strategy, and Public Health Ontario media relations advisor, Janet Wong. Participants had an opportunity to finesse their performance and delivery techniques, learn about verbal and non-verbal communication skills, in addition to learning about media pitfalls, traps and bridging.

Interviews were recorded and played back to provide the participants an opportunity to observe and critique their delivery on-camera, in addition to receiving feedback through group discussion.
