SBC at TOPHC 2019 

It’s nearly time for SBC to take centre stage at The Ontario Public Health Convention (TOPHC), March 27-29, 2019at the Beanfield Centre, which is located at 105 Princes’ Boulevard in Toronto.

Wednesday, March 27th

SBC will kick-off the convention with the SBC recognition ceremony, acknowledging the achievements of our award recipients over the past year.  SBC’s presence at TOPHC this year will be quite significant, as this year marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of Centre. Following the recognition ceremony, a short video will be presented to commemorate this milestone and spotlight the last ten years of the Centre – it’s creation and evolution, Dr. Basrur’s valuable contributions to public health and what the next decade might hold for the Centre.

Thursday, March 28th
SBC Conversation with a Public Health Leader session will feature a question and answer session with Dr. David Williams for students and young professionals.


Friday, March 29th

SBC workshop,  Building a Business Case – Measuring and Communicating the Value and Impact of Public Health, will be offered as a full-day session on the final day of TOPHC, focusing on articulating the value of public health to the health care system and the province.

Throughout TOPHC  
Over the course of the conference SBC will also have a few posters displayed, showcasing the importance and reach of the Centre’s programs. The poster themes as are follows:   

  • Our 2018 Student Travel Bursary recipient, Leah Shipton, will highlight her learnings from her placement at the World Health Organization last summer, focusing on public health policy, human rights and global governance. There will also be an audio component to her poster, providing some valuable insight and reflections post-practicum which will be of interest to the students in attendance at the conference.   
  • Two SBC alumni, Carla King and Anna Vanderlaan, will be showcased in their current public health roles, demonstrating how their SBC learnings have supported their career development. 
  • To honour Dr. Basrur’s exceptional abilities in leadership and communications, an SBC vision board will be displayed during the conference with the intention of acquiring feedback from public health professionals. Conference attendees will be encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas on specific communications and leadership skills required to tackle future public health emergencies which will inform future programs offered by the Centre.
