2020 Student Travel Bursary

The Student Travel Bursary contributes to a deeper understanding of public health in different areas of the world by broadening the student’s experience, knowledge base, skills and understanding of public health. The Bursary supports public health students in pursuing their travel placements abroad, giving students the opportunity to see first-hand how public health programs work within developing countries.

In memory of their daughter, Sheela’s parents, Vasanth and Pari Basrur, established a travel bursary with the intention to support the next generation of public health professionals. For many students, a travel placement in a developing country is an eye-opening experience. They see how poor infrastructure and lack of health programs can lead to harsh and unsafe living conditions. Travel placements within these regions offer students challenging opportunities to establish public health programs in different regions. Previous recipients of the Bursary completed their placements in Africa, Central America and India.

There will be two travel bursaries awarded each year consisting of a maximum $2,000 each.
