In memory of Dr. Donald Low
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Donald Low on September 18, 2013.
A world-renowned microbiologist, Dr. Low was the Medical Director of the PHO Laboratories from 2005 to 2012 as well as the Microbiologist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital. He made extensive contributions to teaching and researching throughout his career and was an internationally recognized expert in infectious diseases.
Dr. Low was a longtime spokesperson and advocate for public health, continuing to inform and engage the public on relevant and timely health issues. His ability to explain complex infectious diseases, research and treatments in ways that can be understood by the public made Dr. Low the trusted voice of public health in Ontario and highly sought after by the media to comment on a range of topics.
During the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) crisis of 2003, both Dr. Basrur and Dr. Low worked tirelessly with the media to communicate the situation to the public, delivering the most relevant and up-to-date information. Their messages were clear, constant and vital in building confidence in public health action.
To honour the legacy of the late Dr. Low, a communications fellowship has been created at the Sheela Basrur Centre, fostering the development of great public health communicators. In offering this fellowship, The Sheela Basrur Centre encourages public health professionals to continue Dr. Low’s legacy in helping the public and media understand complex public health issues.
